Wednesday, August 6, continued
More things we saw on the way:
Cows and mule deer...
Did you know aspen trees had EYES?
Beauty everywhere. Even with a house or two in the picture...
North to Paonia State Park for picnic lunch (peanut butter and jelly sandwiches), then south on 133 through coal mines towards town of Paonia, where we bought fresh apricots, corn and melon from the Black Bridge Winery. South to Hotchkiss, then CO 92 south to just south of Crawford state park, where we turned west on Black Canyon Road. About 12 miles later (half dirt road), we came across the North Rim of Black Canyon of the Gunnison. Wow!
Then back up road to 92 and south through high mesa at 8000 ft plus, many miles, to US 50.
Some of the sights there.... This first one is of a lake which we would later come into in our boat ride on Saturday.
Then, finally, east to our campground. What a day! It was dark when we got home.
Thursday, August 7
Day of Rest. .We did some sorting of rocks we had collected. Later in the day, took County Road 3043 south of CO 149 to the ghost town of Vulcan, an old gold mining area. We saw old cabins, even dugouts...
We have never seen dugouts in person, only n pictures.
and some new mining operations.
We wanted to see the ranger talk on 1890’s time on this area, at the Curecanti National Recreation Area Visitor Center at Elk Creek, but it was rained out. Probably just as well – too much running around these last few days.
