Wednesday, September 16 - Rogue River Campground

We really enjoyed this campground, and spent some time hiking around.

Now it was time to go further south, but found out that Penny (Patty's sister in Durham, CA, near Chico) was working long shifts and would not be available before Saturday noon or so. So we went left and south along state road, interstate and 15 miles of dirt road to a spot on the Little Applegate river where one of the BLM districts in Oregon had public spots for gold panning.  Ed was too busy polishing up on his panning techniques to take pictures, but we had a great time trying...

We turned north ad east again to the resort at Lake of the Woods, near Klamath Falls for a campsite.  Actually, we were interested in one of the FS campsites near the resort, but these were already closed for the season!  The restaurant at the resort was having all you can eat spaghetti and meatballs, so Ed obliged.

Thursday, September 17 - Klamath, Tule lake Wildlife refuge, Lava Beds Nat'l Monument

Made our way to lower elevations near Klamath Falls, and stopped at a rest area along a stream before getting on the highway to California.

had some white pelicans and grebes...

And many more...

Further south, we drove through Tule Lake Wildlife Refuge, with literally thousands of birds, but the big surprise was the two bucks we startled along the road:

You can see here where we are, with Lava Beds National Monument coming up, and a trip to Glass Mountain.
