Sunday July 1

Got up early enough to have breakfast in town at the Catholic Church in Crosslake.  Belgian waffles, sausage, many types of syrups, strawberries, whipped cream and coffee - all you can eat! The to the Evangelical Free church which is actually made of logs.  We met Dennis and Carolyn the Kolbrek there , Sowers with whom we worked in Alabama this February.  They live in this area.

Mon July 2 - Thurs July 5

We learned that the guys will be laying keystone blocks to replace the railroad ties around the camp, and the ladies will be preparing boards (sand and urethane) and logs (grind knots and sand surface) for some new cabins to be built.

These are the first two areas to be built.

Fri July 6

Took a day trip to Pine River, a small town west of here, for groceries and the hardware store. The river, Pine River, is the one that feeds the 14 lakes in the Whitefish chain, including the Cross lake, which eventually flows into the Mississippi.  Every Friday, they have duck races here at the dam site - a local effort  in which you purchase a duck for $1 (in exchange for which you get a duck and a coupon to use at the local merchants),  The ducks are run several heats during the afternoon and prizes are given to the winners.  Here's Patty at the duck and the sign for the races.

The races weren't run today because the recent rains have flooded the area:

Interesting signs along the Paul Bunyan Scenic Byway which crosses here. Are they readable?
